QD4 Preferences

The following options are provided under the options menu to help you customize QD4 and/or increase your performance.

Colour Setup

You can choose any colour combination you like for QD4. Different colours can be selected for folders, executable files, hidden files, normal files and tagged files. This makes it very easy to identify these different types of files at a glance. You can even save different colour schemes so that different users can select a scheme that suits them.

Keyboard Mode

QD4 defaults to keyboard mode for maximum performance and compatibility with QD3. QD3's most powerful feature was it's speed and efficiency made possible by simple common sense commands and operation. This has been adhered too as closely as possible in QD4 but has resulted in reduced mouse functionalilty normally afforded by Windows application. Keyboard mode can be disabled allowing more use of the mouse but QD4 is, and will always be, aimed more at keyboard users. QD4 is a powertool for fast efficient file manipulation and previous experience has demonstrated that the keyboard is still quicker to operate than the mouse for this type of application.

Auto Adjust Column Widths

By default,QD4 automatically adjusts the column widths whenever a folder is read. In folders with a large number of files this can slow things down a little. Turning off this auto adjustment will speed up QD4 but may result in the ends of filenames getting chopped off. You can change to mouse mode and adjust the column widths manually or simply leave the widths as they are.

DOS Mode

This mode displays the files and folders in the same way QD3 does with folders all in upper case and files in lower case. Hidden and system files have the first letter in upper case. This makes it very easy to identify these types very quickly.

Log Events

During copy/move/delete and rename operations, QD4 keeps a log of everything that takes place. By default, QD4 displays this log after each operation so you can check that everything happened correctly. This event log can slow things down a little or you may not wish to view the log every time you do anything so you can turn it off.

Space Bar Tags

In QD3 the space bar was used to jump to the next tagged file in the list. This feature is reproduced in QD4 but you also have the option to use the space bar to tag files. This was included by request.
